Song Circle: Don May, Sarah Bethany & Lopaka Rootz

Kahilu Theatre is proud to present our next Song Circle, a Nashville-style in-the-round show highlighting local songwriters. This show will feature Don May, Sarah Bethany, and Lopaka Rootz. This exclusive concert will take place live on Friday, August 27 at 7pm HST.

Don May is a Texas born, award-winning Americana singer/songwriter living in the up-country town of Kamuela, on Hawai'i Island. A veteran of the world-famous Austin, Texas live music scene, his songs "reflect the grit and emotional honesty of the Texas troubadour tradition and the detailed craftsmanship of Nashville's finest".  As a staff writer for Sony/ATV, JENCO music publishing and most recently CURB/WORD music publishing in Nashville, he has honed his songwriting by working alongside many of the most successful songwriters and record producers in the world. He is currently putting the final touches on his first independent record "The Devils Footprints" slated for release in the summer of 2021.

Minneapolis and St. Louis native, Sarah Bethany, began playing the piano at age seven.  She continued her classical studies at the University of Missouri Kansas City Conservatory of Music, where she discovered an attraction to experimental electronic music composition as well as a love of jazz, hip hop, and reggae music.  Her extensive, advanced vocal studies led her to the music of Rachelle Ferrell and Lalah Hathaway, two of Bethany's most influential vocalists.  Sarah B. has won two of Hawai'i's prestigious  Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards and, performed with Kenny Loggins as well as several Grammy Award winning artists including John Cruz.  Her voice has been heard on many radio stations as a session singer and piano player for numerous albums.

Lopaka Rootz is a musical artist, singer, song writer, and lyricist. He hails from Kailua Kona, on the Big Island of Hawaii. Born in Erie, Pennsylvania he grew up with a mixed plate of ethnicity and cultures. Lopaka learned that he possessed the same qualities as those around him but aspired to have his own identity. Understanding  a perspective of life from a worldwide view allowed him to be in tune with the many different cultures of the world. Breaking through all social barriers showed him what beauty this world really has to offer. He has written and produced music for more than a decade, drawing his early inspiration from the multi-ethnic background and infectious grooves of legendary reggae artist Bob Marley.

This performance is free to all subscribers, and only available to others as a pay-per-view purchase. The original live broadcast will be available to view 24 hours after the initial airing.
