Hawaiian Soul—Educational Outreach Screening & Talk Story
Educational Outreach & Workshops • 1h 4m
Hawaiian Soul is based on the true story of George Helm, a young Hawaiian musician who must gain the support of kūpuna (community elders) from Maui to aid in the fight of protecting the neighboring island of Kahoʻolawe from military bombing. The film took home a pair of awards at the 2020 Hawaii International Film Festival (HIFF). It is a beautifully crafted tribute to those who helped start the Native Hawaiian rights movement.
Following the screening of the 20-minute film, Kahilu Board President Kapena Alapa'i will host a Talk Story discussion about the film with the film's writer-director 'Āina Paikai, and producer Kaliko Ma'i'i.
